Definition: The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code is a six-digit number used to categorize businesses by their primary activities. It helps governments and organizations track economic activity, file taxes, and provide industry-specific support.

Example: A jewellery maker who primarily handcrafts earrings would use the NAICS code 339910 – Jewelry and Silverware Manufacturing to classify their business.
