Definition: The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is a standardized system used by the United States, Canada, and Mexico to classify businesses based on their primary economic activities. Each business is assigned a six-digit code that identifies its industry and operational focus.

Example: A business that creates handmade pottery would use the NAICS code 327110 – Pottery, Ceramics, and Plumbing Fixture Manufacturing to classify its primary activity.
